Happy Together, Toward Pop Art of Coexistence

‘All over the place’, it refers to the state of moving freely and relentlessly, and this is the expression that came to my mind looking at Nancy Lang’s new artworks that are truly beyond expectations. On reflection, her previous performances, in particular, the trajectory she draw as an artist was the same. Because of the popularity and various issues surrounding the artist, it wasn’t easy for her artistic talents to attract attention, but she has certainly been making various new attempts that were unseen in the art world in Korea. Such challenges and experiments are also in line with self-transformation and expansion. For instance, art directing, collaboration, collective branding, business art, and so forth have now established themselves as a flow that is quite familiar in the art world, but they were also an active realization of the various possibilities contemporary art had, which were quite new back then. Is also noteworthy that the artist had exceptionally many titles that had ‘first attempt, the first’ in them, and the artist I remember has never ceased to make efforts to create something new. Such unwavering passion, positive and energetic spirit still continues. This is not as easy as it sounds. This is certainly a precious virtue the artist holds that are rare to find even in the world we’re living in. However, it seems her genuine self has oftentimes been shadowed by her popularity, perhaps, or because she was far ahead or behind the time. Despite the throwaway remarks and tainted images, it seems clear that she remained diligent and consistent as an artist, continuing with new practices and keeping the principles and attitudes that are almost pure and honest. That is why one can’t simply say she moved freely and relentlessly. Rather, one could say that she continued to weave together the multi-faceted yet consistent aspects of herself. As such, she remained consistent as an artist but such honest truth about herself seems like a startling revelation, perhaps because she has been on a road that is by no means easy, as a celebrity, an artist whose private and public life had to be exposed

2
The artist who professed herself the ‘walking pop art’ seems as complex and unpredictable as her previous works, but because of the series of conflicting images such as holy, light, frivolous, but considerate, serious, bright and cheerful yet having dark shadows behind, you could somehow sense the ambivalence of conflicting images that hold conflicting meanings. Such binary opposition are expressed through works, and as for ‘Taboo Yogini’, which is the representative work of the artist that is continuously being transformed even until today since its debut in 2003, its setting was meant to deliver a happy message for our dreams and happiness through the sacrifice between God and humans, but it is basically an existence that holds different meanings and images of Satan and angel combined. Add to that, it is connected to the artist’s situation in reality, of trying to break the taboos that are nothing more than a sociocultural limit, and through such violation, pursue something better, and therefore, is also connected to the artist’s personal aim. So this is her major work that implies the symbolic meanings that are unique to the artist. In that sense, it is the fundamental composition and setting of the artist’s work, and that is the same for the ambivalence. Pop art itself, which the artist continues to practice with interest and affection, has the nature of such contradiction and ambivalence. Pop art tried to bridge the gap between the pop culture, which was popular, and art that is quite different, and during that process, confronting endless tension such as conflict and clash, and that were the natural characteristics of pop art. This is why Roland Barthes commented on pop art, saying “There are two voices, as in a fugue – one says: ‘This is not art’, the other says, at the same time: ‘I am art’”. As such, pop art holds the amazement and contempt against popular culture as well as respect and rejection to art. Heterogeneous, vulgar popular culture and sophisticated culture, art are juxtaposed, and at the same time, all of those that create our reality coexist. I believe the artist’s interest is also not irrelevant to the ambivalent, abstruse and Happy Together, Toward Pop Art of Coexistence Min Byeongjik (Independent Curator, Art Critic) 2022 ๋‚ธ์‹œ๋žญ ์ „์‹œํšŒ ๋‚ด์ง€๋Œ€.indd 37 2022-08-18 ์˜ค์ „ 9:50:51 vague characteristics of pop art that corresponds oddly with those that are real. It is like an instinctive realization that our reality is already contradictory and conflicting, and this is a conceptual recognition of a complicated world, and in that sense, the works of the artist can be understood sensuously and are linked conceptually to the reality of the times. That is perhaps the reason why she has been carrying out strategic plans, project works, which are an attempt to consciously intervene in this contradictory reality. ‘UK Project’, ‘Interference in Domestic Affairs’, and ‘Nancy Lang & Gangnam Friends’ exhibitions would be the most representative of such projects. However, they are at a distance from the constant flow of modern art that is related to the reality such as realism. Although she carried out works that are related to what’s real, in the case of this artist, the approaches were not serious but rather, they were combined with the artist’s unique, silly and delightful performances and delivered in an exclusive and pleasant manner. They even seem to have much more complex and multilayered meaning because of the gestures and images that were characterized as public words and actions or as a public person that are not detached from what’s private. Perhaps this could also be the fate of pop art, and I believe Andy Warhol’s cases that the artist cherishes the most could serve as a reference to understand the complicated intention and circumstances that have been surrounding her. Andy Warhol’s confession that ‘my life has dominated me’, and ‘I’d always like my own tombstone to be blank. No epitaph, and no name. Well, actually, I’d like it to say ‘figment’ quite overlap with the public image of ‘Nancy Lang’ that we are all familiar with. Just as Warhol, Nancy Lang had to pay the penalty of fame because of being a celebrity, and because of the confusion of having her private life and public activities separated, and perhaps that is why judgement about the works she made as an artist had to be distorted at times because of prejudice-like, unpleasant looks thrown at her. We would never know whether only the superficial images and symbols were at work for ‘Nancy Lang’, so much so that some others would call ‘fiction’. That which may be talked of as an icon of the times but an illusion that does not have a clear substance, as if a spectre. However, at the beginning, she could’ve made a strategic use of the images and symbols of ‘Nancy Lang’ as a brand for some time. This is because the artist also tried to settle in the sweet cradle of desire that is created by the times full of simulacre, in other word, the capitalist public cultural space, the consumption society. These aspects may seem secular, but there weren’t simple and blind praise and awe for popular culture. The reality where, through consumption of goods, we endlessly try to satisfy our desire today, but ultimately, only end up with the sense of loss, the temporary and futile reality, and also the pursuit of something that lies beyond are reflected. I should say that it tried to reflect the reasoning for hope, for more happiness based on an honest affirmation of the reality where it seems contradictory but nonetheless, we have no option but to accept it. However, at the same time, it was not as easy as it seems to fully accept the reality where private matters had to become public. Behind the honest and dignified attitude lied vulnerable and sensitive personal emotions, and the internal and external twists and turns in her private life presented new works with different meanings, for instance, the ‘Scarlet’ series, which tried to heal and overcome the personal wounds the artist had, that secret life, with her unique honesty. In the trajectory she created as an artist, this series hold a different and special meaning. By raising the social issue of ‘stigma’, the wounds in her personal life she had to endure as a woman and an artist in the focus of the public attention, she tried to bring it to the fore as an objective problem that women, the weak even in this century, and overcome them. What draws our attention is that by stigmatizing her personal life even during the difficult process, she is sublimating her pain in art. In the twists and turns of life, she had to go through unintended pain and wounds, but she faced them in a dignified manner and even tried to sublimate them. These works that blossomed in beautiful and diverse shapes and colors through delicate hyperrealism seem fancy but they also make you feel the strong sorrow. Above all, her works makes us sympathize deeply with the artist’s unique ontological circumstances, the consistency she had, where her life just had to be art itself. In that sense, even in the artificially processed images and symbols that we believe we know of as ‘Nancy Lang’, we can still witness consistency in how she faced the contradictory reality in a dignified manner and tried to cut across them freely. Someone mentioned ‘poop art is just like taking the outside and putting it in the inside or vice versa’, and this overlaps with the artist in a way, how the concepts oof pop, the contexts of the sociocultural reality are taken into the intended strategies, and the most fierce and private dimensions of life can only get connected to the public realm, and that’s how they can all become our problem.

3
What is clear and certain is that the artist, who is relentless, free, and lives the world full of tension aggressively, never stops. This exhibition, which This exhibition, which is a continuation of challenges following painting of flowers and birds, folk paintings, genre painting and Korean painting is in the same line, delivering scenes that are unexpected. Such a challenge basically takes its root from interest and pride in our unique cultural assets, but there is a difference in that rather than blind preference for something Korean, they are subjects chosen particularly by the artist’s senses, and it also seems related to the artist’s undying interest in pop art and its expansion. As pop art did, our past as in the folk painting, art that is not transcendent and restricted, but that which is related to the natural, vivid, and cultural realities of the Korean people in the past, they pursue a unique and extraordinary art culture that cuts across the times, for example, the traditional things that contain the emotions of the familiar daily life. Although the times were different, they are just as those of pop art, as the popular and realistic culture that we have. And at the center lies the ‘Bubble Coco’ series that the artist worked and planned for 3 years, and they are a series of works that symbolically show the artist’s most recent changes and attempts. Bubble Coco which extended Coco Channel, the alter ego of Nancy Lang, in a systemized series of pop art, is an existence that constantly changes across time and space as well as a multimedia work such as painting, photograph, sculpture, 3D video work and art toy. However, to the artist, Bubble Coco is not just restricted to new attempts with the media, and in particular, as for Coco Channel, which is the foundation of it, has a very special meaning. To the artist, Coco Channel is a precious subject that stayed by her side through all the twists and turns and made Nancy Lang who she is today. Bubble Coco, which sublimated Coco Channel as its major work holds a special meaning, of wanting to sympathize and share the precious and dear message of happiness with everyone in the world. Just being happy, the existence itself being happiness, according to the artist’s expression, those that are happiness without a reason, and being with such Bubble Coco, as an artist, the occupation itself makes her happy. Perhaps this is why the series of works where Bubble Coco appears are differentiated with her previous works, and they reflect a more relaxed and flexible attitude and feelings. She is enjoying the work itself. This can be confirmed through this exhibition, and not only representative works of pop art of the Western world but also Korean traditional cultural heritage, they are all dealt with as if a different landscape in the current times, the characters of popular culture that have somehow become a cliché in our daily life and culture are played out in a comfortable and delightful manner. In fact, such approaches are often displayed by the artist including the “๋ช…์ž‘ ํŒจ๋Ÿฌ๋””” series, and the cheerful vibes still remain but at first, if there were more aspects of critical intervention or appropriation in order to narrow the gap with sophisticated masterpieces or abstruse and transcendent modern art, then they gradually changed to put more emphasis on sensuous amusement. This is as if emphasizing that we should be able to enjoy not only popular culture but also sophisticated art at our comfort, and that this is the emotional, daily reality we are living in. Such attitude and perspective on the world that changed can be confirmed through the ‘Bubble Coco’ series, and the artist’s witty, humorous and cheerful senses can be fully witnessed at this exhibition, which is an extension as well as an expansion of them. In that sense, rather than confronting the contradictory reality, these works seem to be based on the theory of coexistence, of trying to embrace even such realities, and delivering the warmth of being together. They pursue coexistence rather than conflict or confrontation.

4
In fact, the value of coexistence that aspires to communicate, sympathize and share, is the original meaning of pop art and in this sense, the artist is certainly a pop artist. Such meaning of coexistence can be confirmed in the juxtaposition things that do not match, that are so different, which are also visible in the previous works, juxtaposition that considers the iconological meanings such as public and private, outside and inside, natural and artificial, femininity and masculinity, and work styles that freely moves across various techniques and media. In particular, as for the ‘Taboo Yogini’ series, they are connected to the collage technique, which creates a picture using drawing, painting, photograph, graphic image, hologram paint, cubic, crystal, luxurious goods, and animation images, and they can be understood as an attempt to embrace heterogeneous things in the world that exist in a complicated manner. There were slight changes in the new works, but whatever they may be, trying to freely and relentlessly express them remains the same. However, among such free expressions, the sensible insight on the world, coruscating wit can be detected, and perhaps these aspects are what is unique about the artist, the so-called ‘Nancy Lang-like’. For instance, it may be a coincidence, but the title ‘Bubble, Coco’ also shows such meaningful aspects. Bubble, which refers to foam, is a temporary and vain phenomenon, but on the other hand, it can mean the desire endlessly created by the reality as well as the pure dreams of children, and because of the sleek and sparkling pronunciation, it is used as an expression to mean something sexy and fancy, and so this actually overlaps with the image of the artist. As this word was combined with the meaning of ‘Coco’, which came from the nickname of Gabrielle Channel, the designer of luxury goods, and gets deeply related to the times of the reality of consumption capitalism, and it also connects to the hidden meaning of pop art which aspires to make even the delight and unfortunate desperation of the vain and temporary world full of artificial desires continue to exist. They are the artist’s most recent works and a series that will continue to expand in the future, but such meanings are enough to connote all the works the artist engaged in. It seems as if they are sensuously, indifferently created ideas, but in the sense that they unexpectedly imply so many things, they could have stemmed from a great deal of thoughts and conceptual intentions, but such light and heavy, silly but considerate, unpredictable and at times, catching one off guard, the charms of unexpected twists might as well be the elements that constitute ‘Nancy Lang-like’. It is certain that it was a life of twists and turns, swayed by the public interest and judgement, various prejudices and misunderstanding, and at times, bold challenges that seem almost reckless, or extreme honesty that created multilayered images, but ultimately going through them all bravely, and at least, the sincerity and perseverance as an artist, is second to none. Above all, we can confirm a consistent pursuit of something, which is her unique character, positive and hopeful faith in the world. As she has been healing and overcoming the various hardships in reality through her works, the strong belief that she can have positive and good influence in the world is a very important virtue that should never be overlooked, the aim and values she upheld despite the numerous challenges, transformations and new works she engaged in. In that sense, perhaps pop art holds a special meaning that goes beyond the constant flow of modern art. In fact, in the times we live in, pop art itself is nothing new. This is because the realities of popular culture, such visual images have already been internalized in modern art. That is why a simple combination of such pop cultural elements will not become a pop art. Rather, the important point should be how an artist can re-interpret the cultural things in daily life, the dimensions of reality in the artist’s own emotions and thoughts, and make them exist and function as art that holds a particular value. The artist is fully aware of this. Pop art that has been transformed by the artist doesn’t get buried in what’s absolutely personal but respects and considers the desires of others, ruminate on the value of coexistence, draws the artist’s attention to the vivid reality of the world as is right here, right now, and thus, is an art that can also dream of better changes and aims, an art that can continuously be renewed no matter how old such meanings and roles are. As such, it seems the artist is all over the world, moving toward pop art of coexistence, where we can all become happy as long as we are together, happy together
